How a winter boilie dust trick helped tempt giant winter carp

The winter boilie trick helped operations manager Craig to a haul including the mighty mirror Junior at 51 lb 8 oz.

Wednesbury, West Midlands-based Craig, 40, explained: “The weather was bitterly cold with a hard frost when I arrived.

“Two of my favourite swims were free but I had a ‘gut instinct’ telling me to go to an unfavourable area.

“I don’t know why but the feeling was strong so I followed my gut.”

All the fish came at Shropshire’s The Avenue after some careful thought about what bait to offer.

Winter boilie trick explained

Craig told Angler’s Mail all about how he tweaked his winter boilie offering.

“I opted for crushed Dynamite Monster Tiger Nut, Red-Amo and Complex-T boilies and particles,” he revealed.

“The main difference is I used a lot of Red-Amo liquid mixed with hemp oil which acts as a great carrier in the winter for the Red-Amo.

“To get the two to infuse I blitz a kilo of Red-Amo boilies to a fine powder.

“I then add the two mixed liquids until I achieve a thick milkshake consistency. This is then added to the particle mix.

“I think it’s a great edge as loads of attraction with lots of soluble items that won’t fill the fish up once they find the bait.

“Hookbaits were a wafter wrapped in matching paste.

“I spodded out an area where my instinct told me where the carp would be hiding.”

Quick success with cold-water carp

Craig continued: “It didn’t take long and I soon had my first carp of 17 lb 8 oz in the net.

“An hour later I was away again, this time attached to something much heavie.

“And after an arm-aching 20 minutes I netted my UK PB common at 42 lb 8 oz. I was absolutely buzzing.

Craig added: “I had clocked that feeding times were very short and localised and I needed fresh bait applied two hours before this time.

“The next take came the next day and a 15 lb 4 oz mirror had slipped up.

“I had the spot rocking and instead of disturbing the area, I left the other rod out on its own.

“That tore off just before last light and a real heavy leviathan did its best to shed the barbless size 8.

“I eventually netted her first time. It was Junior. one of the ‘A-team’, at 51 lb 8 oz. I couldn’t believe it.

“I had no dry clothes left as it hadn’t stopped raining all day but I wasn’t bothered.

“The next day, same tactics and within half hour of each I had 44 lb and 46 lb mirrors.

“I will be fishing all winter every other weekend in pursuit of Britain’s biggest common and a potential British record.

“This was last caught at 65 lb so could be over 70 lb. Now that would make a great snow carp…” concluded Craig.
