ROSS FARNES kept away from the pressurised area of the lake - and was rewarded with this 50 lb 2 oz mirror carp.

The 36-year-old told Angler’s Mail how he enjoyed big carp success at Elphicks Fisheries in Kent.
“I had a quick chat with the bailiff, who said a few good fish had been out over the weekend from the deeper part of the North Lake,” said Ross.
“When I got to the lake I found five anglers fishing this area, so after a quick walk round and a check of the weather forecast, I decided to jump in a swim between two islands. It was away from the angling pressure and where I knew the lake was shallower.
“After a few casts with a bare lead, I clipped the rods up and decided to fish with PVA bags and Mainline Essential Cell wafters at 30 yards.
“A couple of hours later the right-hand rod rattled off and a lovely 34 lb common was in the net.”

Ross continued: “I quickly got the rod back out on the spot and then in the early hours of Monday morning the right-hand rod was off again.
“That resulted in a monster of a mirror in the net, which I later found out was the current lake record.
“The daytime was slow, so I decided to introduce some hemp, but it remained quiet until 7pm, and then everything went crazy, including double takes.
“This spell brought a 27 lb 4 oz mirror, three 30 lb commons to 38 lb 8 oz and a 41 lb 2 oz common. What a crazy 36 hours!”
More about Elphicks Fisheries
Elphicks Fisheries has in the past come to national attention for its big carp on a day ticket.
One particular giant, The Big Girl, rose to weights of over 60 lb near a decade ago. That fish was even tipped to become a future British record. It’s didn’t manage it, and the British best is currently still 68 lb 1 oz.
There are seven lakes available for day ticket and specimen ‘session fishing’ at Elphicks Fisheries. It’s situated at Horsmonden in Kent, a few miles outside Tunbridge Wells.
Each lake has its own parking within easy reach of the swims, making for brilliant access. All of the swims are built of Astroturf, stone or bark, making them comfortable even in foul weather.
Day tickets for the main carp lakes cost £25 (three rods). There are various other options and they’re detailed on the venue’s own website.
